Embracing My Journey as a Commercial Model: Defying Stereotypes and Overcoming Challenges in the Zimbabwe modelling Industry

From a young age, I dreamt of gracing billboards and magazine covers, but little did I know the rocky path that lay ahead of me. Growing up in a society bound by stereotypes and rigid beauty standards, pursuing a career in modeling seemed like an unattainable dream, especially in a complex modelling industry like Zimbabwe's.

However, with unwavering determination and relentless passion, I decided to defy the odds stacked against me. I refused to let societal norms dictate the trajectory of my life. Each rejection only fueled my fire, pushing me to work harder and strive for success in an industry that often seemed impenetrable. Out of a hundred Nos that one yes gave me hope!

As a commercial model, I constantly keep challenging myself by breaking the established norms of beauty and representation. With every photoshoot and campaign, I aim to showcase the diverse beauty that exists beyond the narrow confines of conventional standards one smile at a time.

Yet, amidst the glamour and spotlight, I battled my own inner demons. Body dysmorphia, a silent struggle that plagued my journey, threatened to dim the bright lights of my aspirations. Through God, self-care, my supportive friends and family, and unwavering self-love, I confronted these challenges head-on, learning to embrace my flaws and imperfections as part of what made me uniquely beautiful.

Since the age of 17, I constantly talked myself out of pursuing my burning desire to become a model. I often made excuses, telling myself, "I'll start when I have enough money, resources, and time, or when I finally lose those extra pounds." However, I learned that waiting for the ideal moment is futile. The perfect opportunity often arises in the midst of imperfection. My first modeling assignment came at a time when I wasn't entirely comfortable with my appearance due to weight gain, but I embraced the opportunity regardless.

When I first started modeling, I was eager to land gigs and build my portfolio. However, in my excitement, I almost signed a contract without fully understanding its terms. It wasn't until later that I realized I could have unknowingly bound myself or breached terms. This close call prompted me to delve deeper into the legal aspects of being a model. I educated myself on contract language, rights as a model, and the importance of seeking legal advice before signing any agreement. This experience taught me the invaluable lesson of the significance of legal awareness in the world of modeling.

Navigating the ins and outs of the Zimbabwean modeling industry presented its own set of challenges. From fierce competition to limited opportunities, every step forward felt like a marathon. I grew to learn that there was the common practice of undercharging and over-delivering in this industry which caused one to get more modelling assignments, while initially appealing, proved unsustainable and eventually led to burnout. However, by staying true to my vision, working tirelessly, and building a solid support network, I began to carve a path for myself.

Today, as I reflect on my journey to becoming a commercial model, I see not just the struggles and triumphs but also the growth and resilience that have shaped me into the person I am today.
